Biography

Eivind Holtsmark Ringstad was born in 1994 and lives in Oslo, Norway.

At the age of five he started playing the violin, but moved to the viola as his main instrument aged 14. He is currently a student at Barratt Due Institute of Music, studying under Soon-Mi Chung. In March 2012 he won the prestigious music competition Eurovision Young Musician 2012 in Vienna. Eivind is established as one of the most exiting young Norwegian talents, and is highly sought after both as a soloist and a chamber musician.

In 2010 Eivind was awarded second prize in the soloist class of Norwegian Youth Music Championships. He participated at the Bergen International Festival in 2011, and the same year he was a part of the Musica Mundi chamber music course and festival in Waterloo, as well as the international Brahms competition in Austria where he won the jury´s Special Prize. Eivind represented Norway in the festival Rising stars of Kremlin in November 2011. Same year his chamber music group Trio Pathetico won the title Musicians of the year in the Norwegian Youth Music Competition. In March 2012 he won first prize in the national NRK Soloist Competition Virtuos and The Norwegian Soloist Prize, which resulted in a broadcasted solo recital at Edvard Grieg´s home at Bergen International Festival and a soloist invitation to the Norwegian Radio Orchestra. As a consequence of winning Virtous Eivind represented Norway in the EBU competition Eurovision Young Musician 2012, where he, as previously mentioned, won the first prize. In 2013 he was awarded Arve Tellefsens Music Prize, as well as the Karolinerprisen for his high artistic performance combined with high school education. Eivind has been invited to several of the biggest festivals in Norway, such as Oslo Chamber Music Festival, Risør Chamber music Festival, and Trondheim International Chamber Music Festival. He has also played with symphony orchestras in Stavanger, Trondheim, Kristiansand, as well as the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. In October 2013 he will make his debut with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra with Eivind Aadland as the conductor.

I femårsalderen begynte han å spille fiolin, men gikk siden over til bratsj i en alder av 14 år. For tiden er Eivind student ved Barratt Due Musikkinstitutt, hvor han studerer med Soon-Mi Chung. I 2010 ble Eivind tildelt førstepris i ensembleklassen og andrepris i solistklassen under Ungdommens Musikkmesterskap. Eivind gjestet Festspillene i Bergen i 2011, og samme år deltok han på Musica Mundi chamber Music Course and Festival i Waterloo, samt International Johannes Brahms Competition i Østerrike, hvor han ble tildelt 4.pris i tillegg til juryens spesialpris. Eivind representerte Norge ved Rising Stars of Kremlin i 2011. Samme år vant hans trio «Trio Pathetico» utnevnelsen «Årets Musiker» i Ungdommens Musikkmesterskap. I mars 2012 vant han NRKs solistkonkurranse VIRTUOS og Den Norske Solistpris, noe som ga ham egen kringkastet konsert fra Troldhaugen under Festspillene i Bergen i tillegg til solistoppgave med Kringkastingsorkesteret. Som følge av førsteplassen i Virtuos representerte han også Norge ved EBUs konkurranse Eurovision Young Musicians på Rådhusplassen i Wien 11. mai 2012, hvor han som tidligere nevnt fikk 1.pris og tittelen «Eurovision Young Musician 2012». I 2013 ble han tildelt «Arve Tellefsens musikkpris», samt «Karolinerprisen». Eivind er blitt invitert til de største kammermusikkfestivalene i Norge, så som Oslo Kammermusikkfestival, Risør Kammermusikkfestival og Trondheim Internasjonale Kammermusikkfestival. Han har også spilt med symfoniorkestre i Stavanger, Kristiansand og Trondheim. I oktober 2013 gjør han sin solistdebut med Oslo Filharmoniske orkester, hvor han spiller Sinding Suite under ledelse av Eivind Aadland.
