Biography

In the Autumn of 2014, four young musicians from the Barratt Due Institute of Music founded the Opus13 String Quartet, all four of whom with much chamber music experience from other ensembles, courses and projects. After just a few weeks of playing together, the quartet was invited to perform on national radio, and not long afterwards, they performed in Oslo, on the occasion of the Vertavo Quartet’s 30th anniversary.

In autumn 2014, the string quartet named ‘Opus13’ after Felix Mendelssohn’s passionate String Quartet in A minor, was established by four young musicians from Barratt Due Institute of Music. The quartet debuted shortly after, both on national radio and on the Oslo Quartet Series, as part of their talent development program.

Opus13 has been recieved tuition from several of the world’s leading chamber musicians, including members of Quatuor Ebène, Artemis Quartett, Vertavo String Quartet, the Oslo String Quartet and Quatuor Mosaique. The quartet has also collaborated with Vertavo and Marianna Shirinyan, as well as Konstantin Heidrich (Fauré Quartett) through the Crescendo program for young chamber groups in 2016.

In 2017, apart from performances in Bergen and other concert venues in Norway, Opus13 String Quartet are making their debut in France and Denmark.

SONOKO MIRIAM SHIMANO WELDE, VIOLIN

Sonoko Miriam (born 1996) is from Bergen. In 2014 she won NRK’s “Virtuoso” and the Norwegian soloist prize and represented Norway in the Eurovision Young Musician in Cologne. As a soloist, she has performed with, among others Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln, Combattimento Consort Amsterdam, Oslo Camerata, Estonian Chamber Orchestra and the Zagreb soloists. Sonoko Miriam is an enthusiastic chamber musician who has collaborated with renowned artists such as Leif Ove Andsnes, Tabea Zimmermann, Clemens Hagen and Itamar Golan.

Her main teachers for many years at the Barratt Due Institute of Music has been Stephan Barratt-Due and Alf Richard Kraggerud. Since spring 2016 she has been studying at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, Berlin, under Professor Kolja Blacher and receives extra tuition from Vilde Frang.

Sonoko Miriam plays on a 1714 Alessandro Gagliano on loan from Dextra Musica.

EDVARD ERDAL, VIOLIN

Edvard Erdal (born 1996) comes from Lillehammer, started to play the violin at the age of 5, and is currently studying with Stephan Barratt-Due at the Barratt Due Institue of Music. Edvard has won several chamber music competitions with different ensembles, and has made himself noticed as an eager orchestra musician, with appearances as a substitute in both the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Norwegian Opera Orchestra.

MICHAEL GROLID, VIOLA

Michael Grolid (born 1997) lives in Ås in eastern Norway, and has played the violin and the viola since he was seven years old. He is currently a Bachelor student at the Barratt Due Institute of Music, with Peter Herresthal as his teacher. In spring 2016, Michal won the Audience Price at the “Virtuos” competition, organised by the Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). In addition to playing the viola, he is also composing music, and in February 2014, his “Overture for hardanger fiddle and orchestra” was performed by the Barratt Due Symphony Orchestra, in the Norwegian Opera and Ballet. In 2015, Michael appeared as a soloist with both the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and the Norwegian Broadcasting Orchestra performing his own viola concerto. In october 2016, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra performed his  piece “Fanfare”.

FRIDA THARALDSEN SKAFTUN, CELLO

Frida Tharaldsen Skaftun (born 1995) comes from Stavanger, and started to play the cello at the age of 8. She is currently studying with Ole Eirik Ree at the Barratt Due Institue of Music. She has been awarded several prizes and scholarships, among them 1st prizes in the Norwegian Youth Competition, the Shell Scholarship, and the G9alt Scholarship.
